Vitamin B’s.. Why Are They So Important?
Vitamin B’s.. Why Are They So Important?
There are eight different types of B Vitamins and most of them work synergistically together.
This group of vitamins are water-soluble & are essential for almost every metabolic pathway in the body, including creating DNA and red blood cells.
Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water and are not stored by the body. Since they are eliminated in urine, we require a continuous daily supply in small quantities through diet, some great foods containing B Vitamins are; red meats (especially liver), seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, legumes, leafy greens, nuts, seeds & nutritional yeast.
So if we can get these vitamins from food, why would we need to supplement?
You see a number of processes can destroy or reduce the availability, like extended cooking/heating, food processing and excess alcohol & caffeine consumption.
Some common Vitamin B deficiency signs & symptoms are;
Mental impairment, memory loss, pale skin, reduced sensation of touch, shortness of breath, or tingling/numbness of feet & arms, headaches, mouth ulcers, hair loss, Immune system disorders, digestive complaints, gastritis, anaemia, poor balance, depression, pain, inflammation, extreme tiredness (fatigue) & lack of energy (lethargy).
With this in mind alcoholics, vegans & vegetarians may need daily supplementation.
It is important not to self-diagnose a vitamin deficiency, because some vitamins can be toxic if taken incorrectly and/or mask other vitamin deficiencies.
